"The Modern Day Warrior"
Part of the legendary Von Erich professional wrestling family, Kerry Von Erich was born in Niagara Falls, New York. Von Erich was a standout football player and discus thrower at the University of Houston (he qualified for the 1980 U.S. Olympic team but the U.S. subsequently boycotted the games). In 1984, Von Erich, who also wrestled under the names The Modern Day Warrior and The Texas Tornado, captured the NWA World Heavyweight Championship after defeating Ric Flair (who regained the title just 18 days later). Von Erich's victory served as a memorable tribute to his brother, David, who had died three months earlier. In 1986, Von Erich was involved in a serious motorcycle accident and one of his feet had to be amputated. He continued to wrestle with a prosthetic foot and soon became addicted to painkillers. Von Erich committed suicide at the Von Erich family ranch on February 18, 1993, at the age of 33.
